What Can Real Estate Agents Learn From Vogelkop Bowerbirds

You’re probably wondering what a Vogelkop Bowerbird is.  I had never heard of them either until I saw them on Life, the latest Discovery Channel series.  In this particular episode, they profile these Bowerbirds.  The Bowerbirds win their mate by decorating their nest in different styles.  Each bird uses different ‘knick-knacks’ from around the forest to create their own style.  They are competing with several other birds in the ‘neighborhood’ doing the same thing. So whoever comes up with the nicest, most attractive nest wins the buyer, I mean mate.  So it appears the Vogelkop Bowerbirds are the original stagers.  Maybe we could learn a lesson or two from these veterans, although I recommend leaving the deer dung outside.

I couldn’t find a way to embed the video here so you will have to go check it our for yourself.

  1. That’s hilarious! It’s funny how birds use color to attract mates. Although I didn’t catch whether it tends to be the males that do the decorating. With birds, I’m pretty sure it is almost always the male who puts on these flashy, colorful displays.

  2. How very interesting that these birds do about the same as humans!! May the best house win the bidding process,

  3. Wow! Just love this post of yours I have been visiting so many real estate blogs this day and all of them are tackling about same thing, “How to”, Tips for”, etc., but what you posted in here for me is a unique one that for sure will win the eyes and mind of many readers.

  4. This is very interesting! Great take on staging- it is a very important part of the real estate industry! We all want to live in the very best- why wouldn’t these birds?? Thanks for sharing this!

  5. I am totally agree with this post. The points you have considered is very much true.I like the example you have taken to explain the work of real estate agents.Great post.

  6. Great article! It’s funny how we can always find a situation in nature that reflects our own reality. Real Estate is a great industry for that simple fact- the strongest or best product will always win (sell) in the end.

  7. Your post made my day! I never knew birds could think that way. I saw the video and I was amused with how the male bird tried his best to make his nest look pretty hot to the female Bowerbird. It clearly shows that human beings can learn a thing or two from these lovely creatures! You have such fresh perspectives….Great concept on “staging”!…..love your blog post 😉

  8. This would be good to show a single male who is considering the purchase of a condo. A new, stylish condo can ideed be a “babe magner.”

  9. I think the female should have chosen the first bird who didn’t use deer dung to decorate his abode. Those little houses of seduction were awesome though! There were a lot of square inches in there!

  10. Very interesting. I agree with the earlier comments that this is applicable on the real estate indutry too. After all presentation is the most important aspect of the deal.

  11. Interesting and very educative. Doing our best to make our buildings attractive and impressive will aid us in estate marketing indeed. It reminds me of a community in South Africa where decorating your outer and inner wall determines how rich and influential you will be in the society. This interesting enough eventually propels you into affluence and prosperity.
This shows that the Master Maker has everything prepared for us to succeed- If we can study His work, just like the Vogelkop Bowerbirds, ants, etc.

  12. Visual appeal is the first most important aspect to consider for getting anyone’s attention. Only after initial attraction can you take things forward.

  13. Great post. I just found your blog today and learned that I need to help my sellers become Bowerbirds so that we can get their home sold. Now I just have to see which Buyers will enter the nest.

  16. Being successful in a real estate career isn’t “rocket science,” but it isn’t “as easy as falling off a log” either.
