Waller Creek Tunnel Project Gets Underway

The Waller Creek Tunnel Project gets underway today.  Crews will begin renovating a pedestrian bridge in preparation for the project.  While planning has been underway for years, this marks the first visible signs of construction.

Once completed, the Waller Creek Tunnel Project will have removed approximately 28 acres from the flood zone along Waller Creek stretching from Lady Bird Lake to Waterloo Park.  This will be accomplished by building a tunnel that redirects storm water out of the creek preventing overflow.  This will be a huge boon for the area as many developers will be eager to build along this stretch.  Many have compared the project to the San Antonio Riverwalk but with our own Austin flavor.  The project is expected to take about  four years to complete.

  1. No doubt this will bring new jobs and further prosperity to Austin. We have had overflow issues here in middle GA so I know how important a project like this is to a community. I bet those living and working around Waller Creek are appreciative.

  2. Hopefully by the 2014 completion date the economy will have started moving again and the developers will be ready to move in st start new projects.

  3. Looks like a nice project. Parks like this are great for the community. Gives the neighborhood a good place to spend quality time.

  4. This looks like it’s going to be a really nice park when completed. This really adds value to the area. I saw a similar park in Greenville, SC and it is really nice. The community will enjoy this!

  5. This will definitely create more job opportunities; and at this moment we need more jobs – that’s one of the important ways to make the market stable.

  6. Anything that nice is worth the money and time that goes into it. I’m curious about what developers will build along the stretch once it’s complete? Will it be store fronts, or something scenic?

  7. There will be a mix. Storefronts with greenspace as well. There are plans to have hike/bike trails along certain areas.

  8. Improvement plans also include the widening of the pedestrian bridge over Waller Creek and a renovation to the Austin Rowing Association’s boat house.

  9. I am happy to see this type of blog be put up. I am glad to here it reinforced that I should try to write excellent long enduring content. As it is often difficult to hold to your guns when you see yourself out ranked by splogs

  10. Great Project I am very eager to find this project done successfully and hope for more new projects that help the people
